Volunteer with Whitehead Railway Museum / Railway Preservation Society of Ireland
We are inviting expressions of interest from individuals who would like to get involved in preserving and promoting Ireland’s rich railway heritage through volunteering.
We are a volunteer-run organisation dedicated to preserving, conserving and restoring historic railway vehicles from the era when steam trains were common. Our volunteers help keep Irish railway heritage alive through work at Whitehead Railway Museum and across the wider Railway Preservation Society of Ireland.
Opportunities available
We are currently promoting a wide range of volunteer opportunities across Whitehead Railway Museum and the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland.
We expect to be promoting approximately 25 to 50 volunteer opportunities across areas including operations, education, events, maintenance, administration, marketing and educational outreach.
There are a wide variety of roles available, from customer-facing and visitor support positions to hands-on operational and restoration roles. These include opportunities in:
- Restoration and maintenance of historic locomotives and carriages
- Tour guiding and visitor engagement
- Exhibition and event support
- Administration and committee support
- Marketing and educational outreach
- Train operations, catering, shop support and cleaning
These opportunities may suit individuals who want to gain practical experience, develop new skills, meet new people and play a meaningful role in protecting an important part of Ireland’s heritage.
Why volunteer with us?
Volunteering with us is an opportunity to become part of a passionate and purpose-driven organisation where there is something for everyone.
By volunteering with us, you can:
- Gain valuable hands-on experience
- Learn new skills and receive training
- Meet new people and be part of a friendly team
- Contribute to a worthwhile cause
- Help preserve Ireland’s railway heritage for future generations
You do not need previous railway experience to get involved, and training is provided based on the area you are interested in. Volunteers are generally aged 18 or over, although there are some pathways for younger volunteers in Whitehead. Some roles may also require membership, medical disclosure or AccessNI / GAVF checks depending on the nature of the work.
