Northern Ireland Environment Link is seeking an experienced Network, Communications and Monitoring Officer to work on a PEACEPLUS funded project focused on strengthening the capacity of environmental NGOs across the island of Ireland. The project aims to enhance cross-border cooperation, improve organisational capability, and support collaborative action on shared environmental challenges.

The Network, Communications and Monitoring Officer will be responsible for ensuring effective project communications, lead on building and supporting cross-border networking and overseeing monitoring and evaluation processes.

About the Organisation

Northern Ireland Environment Link (NIEL) is the networking and forum body for non‐statutory organisations concerned with the natural and built environment of Northern Ireland. Our 52 Full Members (environmental NGOs) represent 190,000 individuals, 262 subsidiary groups, have an annual turnover of £70 million and manage over 314,000 acres of land. Members are involved in environmental issues of all types and at all levels from the local community to the global environment. NIEL brings together a wide range of knowledge, experience and expertise which is used to help develop policy, practice and implementation across a wide range of environmental fields.

About the Project

In recent years, NIEL and its sister network the Irish Environmental Network (IEN) have been working together to address cross-border environmental challenges, focusing on research, dialogue, and relationship-building within the environmental NGO sector.

The island of Ireland is a single biogeographic unit, with shared landscapes, water systems, and interconnected habitats. Both jurisdictions face significant climate and biodiversity challenges, and protecting the environment depends on coherent policy-making, high standards, and effective cross-border cooperation. Strengthening collaboration between Northern Ireland and Ireland presents a key opportunity to improve environmental outcomes on an all-island basis.

NIEL and the IEN have received support from the PEACEPLUS programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB), to deliver a project building directly on this work by providing targeted support to environmental NGOs on both sides of the border aimed at enhancing structured, effective all-island cooperation in the sector.

Through capacity-building training, monitoring, and knowledge exchange, the project will strengthen leadership, governance, and collaborative skills among participating organisations. The project aims to empower environmental NGOs to engage confidently in policy development, foster long-term partnerships, and deliver sustainable solutions to shared environmental challenges across the island.
